
Spring is the perfect time to explore the amazing world of plants! If you’re looking for engaging kindergarten plant activities, a plant inquiry is a wonderful way to combine science, literacy, observation and hands-on learning while encouraging children to ask questions and make discoveries.
In our classroom, we spent several weeks investigating how plants grow, the parts of a plant and the plant life cycle. Through books, experiments and open-ended investigations, students developed a deeper understanding of the natural world while expanding their science vocabulary and observation skills.
Building Background Knowledge with Books
We began our inquiry by reading a variety of fiction and nonfiction books about plants. These books sparked conversations, answered questions and introduced important scientific concepts in ways that were meaningful for young learners.

Learning the Parts of a Plant
One of our first science goals was learning the parts of a plant. We introduced vocabulary such as:
- seed
- roots
- stem
- leaves
- flower
- soil
- shoot
- germination
Rather than simply memorizing the words, we used picture cards throughout our inquiry. The visuals helped students remember the vocabulary and encouraged them to use scientific language during conversations and investigations.
Over time, it was exciting to hear students naturally using words like “roots,” “stem” and “germination” as they explained their observations.
Watching Seeds Grow

One of the highlights of our plant life cycle for kindergarten inquiry was growing bean plants in clear bags.
Because the bags were transparent, students could observe each stage of growth as it happened. They watched the seed absorb water, the root emerge first, and, eventually, the stem and leaves began to grow.
Every day brought something new to notice, making this one of our favourite classroom science investigations.
Planting Sunflowers to Take Home
After learning how plants grow, each student planted a sunflower seed to care for and eventually take home.
This activity gave students ownership over their learning and encouraged them to continue observing plant growth with their families.

Exploring Plants Through Art and Science

Students used botanical rubbing plates to create detailed plant illustrations before labelling the different parts of their plants using the vocabulary they had learned.
This simple activity reinforced plant anatomy while strengthening fine motor skills and scientific observation.
Investigating Different Types of Seeds
Our inquiry also included opportunities to become scientists through observation.
Students examined a variety of seeds using their senses and discussed questions like:
- How are these seeds alike?
- How are they different?
- Which seed is the biggest?
- Which is the smallest?
- What do you notice about their shapes, colours and textures?

After exploring the seeds, students carefully drew what they observed, encouraging close observation and scientific thinking.
Matching Seeds to the Plants They Become
To deepen students’ understanding of the plant life cycle, we explored how different seeds grow into different plants.

Students worked together to match photographs of seeds with the plants they eventually become. This activity sparked rich discussions and helped students make connections between the tiny seeds they were observing and the fruits, vegetables, and flowers they see every day.
Why I Love Inquiry-Based Science in Kindergarten
One of my favourite things about a kindergarten science inquiry is how naturally it encourages curiosity.
Instead of simply learning facts, children become active participants in their own learning. They ask questions, make predictions, observe changes over time, record their thinking and build background knowledge through meaningful experiences.
Our plant inquiry integrated science, literacy, art, fine motor development and oral language while giving students authentic opportunities to think like scientists.
