
Teaching the water cycle in kindergarten is one of my favourite science units because it combines literacy, inquiry, hands-on learning, and meaningful discussions. Young learners are naturally curious about rain, puddles, snow, and clouds, making water the perfect topic for exploration.
Before beginning this unit, I spent time planning meaningful learning experiences that would encourage curiosity and build foundational science understanding. In this post, I’m sharing the books, lessons, and hands-on water cycle activities for kindergarten that helped my students understand the different states of water and how water moves through the water cycle.
Introducing Water Through Picture Books
I always like to begin a new science inquiry with engaging read-alouds that build background knowledge and spark curiosity.

Some of the books we explored included:
- A Drop of Water (our introduction to the states of water and the water cycle)
- A Raindrop’s Journey
- A collection of nonfiction books from Epic Books
These books gave students opportunities to ask questions, make observations and begin using science vocabulary in meaningful ways.
Teaching the States of Water
One of the highlights of our unit was a simple science experiment that allowed students to observe water in its different states.
Using ice, boiling water, salt, plastic wrap and two bowls, students observed how water can exist as a solid, liquid, and gas. Rather than simply telling students about these changes, they were able to see the transformations happen before their eyes, leading to thoughtful discussions and lots of excitement.
This experiment provided a concrete foundation before we explored the entire water cycle.
Building Vocabulary and Background Knowledge
Strong vocabulary instruction helps young learners explain what they observe.

Throughout the unit, we used:
- an interactive slide presentation about water
- explicit instruction with water vocabulary cards
- repeated discussions using our new science words during lessons and activities
Students became increasingly confident using words such as:
- evaporation
- condensation
- precipitation
- vapor
- solid
- liquid
- droplet

Hands-On Water Cycle Activities for Kindergarten
Hands-on learning is essential in kindergarten, especially when teaching science concepts. To reinforce our learning, students completed several engaging activities.
Water Cycle in a Bag

This classic activity allowed students to watch condensation and evaporation happen over time. Students loved checking on their bags each day and making observations about what they noticed.
Cloud Water Drop Experiment
Using a pipette, students carefully added drops of water onto a baking sheet. They absorbed the droplets with a cotton-ball “cloud” until it became saturated. This simple activity demonstrated how clouds hold water before precipitation occurs and worked on fine motor skills.

Water Cycle Lantern

Our water cycle lanterns allowed students to review each stage of the cycle while creating a fun keepsake that they were excited to take home.
Water Cycle Cut-and-Paste Assessment
To wrap up our inquiry, students completed a cut-and-paste assessment to demonstrate their understanding of the stages of the water cycle and key vocabulary.
It was a wonderful way to see how much they had learned throughout the unit.

Why I Love Teaching the Water Cycle in Kindergarten
This inquiry combines literacy, science, oral language and hands-on exploration in ways that are both engaging and developmentally appropriate. By providing students with rich picture books, meaningful experiments, explicit vocabulary instruction and interactive activities, they develop a strong understanding of how water changes and moves through our environment.
The excitement and curiosity my students showed throughout this inquiry reminded me just how powerful hands-on science can be in the kindergarten classroom.
