I love doing multi-step art projects with my students. They allow us to explore different materials and techniques. This winter tree art project was perfect for my students!
I was inspired by Natalie Lynn Kindergarten’s Easy Winter Tree Art Project, but I did it in a slightly different way.
Materials
I used a few different materials to create the winter tree art project with my kindergarten students:
- white printer paper
- bleeding tissue paper squares (use code creative15 for a discount)
- blue construction paper
- small amount of brown construction paper
- scissors
- glue
- white tempera paint
Day 1 – Create the Tree(s)

I set out the two shades of green squares included in the bleeding tissue paper pack that I had. Students covered their white paper with the squares and ‘painted’ water over the squares to transfer the ink to the paper.
We let it dry overnight on our drying rack.
Day 2 – Cut out the Trees and Paint
Once the background for the trees were dry, students picked off the tissue paper squares and cut a large triangle out of the paper. I showed them how to draw a line with a pencil on the back of their paper from the corners to the top center to create a triangle. Once they cut out a large triangle, they could cut out smaller triangles if they wanted to using the scraps.

They glued the tree(s) to a piece of blue construction paper. Students then added a small rectangle of brown construction paper to create the tree trunk(s).
Then, they used their fingertip dipped in white paint to add the snowflake detail to their winter tree art project!

These turned out fantastic and are looking super cute on our bulletin board!
