Sight Word Parking Lot is a simple game that allows students to learn to recognize and read sight words.
I have seen this activity done a lot on Pinterest, but I have had a hard time finding one that I like and that is inviting to students. So I made one that is colourful and easy for them to play.
For this game you will need to provide each student with: a game board (included), sight word cards (included) and 10 toy cars (optional).
Set up: Place a game board on a flat surface. Beside the board, place in a pile the 10 corresponding sight word cards and the toy cars (if you are using them).
Each student has to choose a card from the pile, read the sight word on it and drive a car to the correct parking space with the matching sight word on it. If you don’t want to use cars, they can place the sight word card in the correct parking space.
Students can also play in pairs, with each student taking turns picking a card and reading the sight word on it.
A fun twist: we wrote the sight words on some toy cars, so the children could pick a car, read the sight word that is written on it and drive it into its parking space!
For easy set-up and clean-up, I used coordinating colours to back the game boards and the sight word cards (so all 10 sight word cards that belong to a game board have the same colour construction paper on the back). This way it is easy to know where each sight word card belongs!
Included in this set:
- 6 parking lot game boards with different sets of sight words on them,
- 1 empty game board that can be filled in with your own sight words,
- 60 sight word cards that correspond to the game boards,
- 1 empty sight word cards sheet to fill in with your own sight words.
