Write the Room Activities are an engaging way to reinforce a variety of skills. Use them in your kindergarten classroom to get students excited to learn!
A fun way to keep your students engaged and learning in the classroom is to incorporate some write the room activities. They are perfect for practicing a variety of skills and my students always get so excited when one is available.
Set Up
It’s easy to set up a Write the Room Activity. You can place cards around your classroom that students have to find and interact with. This can be as simple as placing letters or sight words on note cards and taping them in different areas, and students use a whiteboard or piece of paper to record them.
They can get more complicated and work on different skills as well. I have seen some educators use QR codes and iPads: students scan the QR codes and answer a question on the iPad. I haven’t done a write the room like this, but it is something I want to try out.
If you need something with even easier set-up, you can try my Alphabet Write the Room. Students find words in the classroom that begin with a certain letter of the alphabet – you don’t even need to put up any cards they just use words that are already there (books, bulletin boards, posters, etc.)
I like giving my students clipboards (affiliate link) as they are walking around, this makes it easier for them to write on. Instead of trying to find a surface to use.
Another tip for easy set-up: task a student to put the cards up around the classroom. I loved doing this, and my students were so excited to help. I would also task them with taking down the cards once we were done with the activity.
Write the Room Activities
There are so many different activities to do- a favourite for my students is a Colour Around the Room activity. This has students work on colour words as they find the different cards and colour in the picture.
For a challenging sight word activity, this Unscramble the Room is a lot of fun! Students find the card and then have to figure out which sight word they can spell with the letters.
For another No Prep Math Write the Room Activity, these pages are perfect. There is no set-up, students just use the classroom environment to fill in the pages.
Another favourite of my students- Can You Fix It? The cards have different addition and subtraction sentences on them, but there is a mistake in how they are written. Students have to re-write it and fix the mistake. I used common errors that I found my students were doing with the math sentences, so this is great for fixing misunderstandings.
Need more? I also have write the room activities to work on addition, CVC words and school supplies.
More Ideas
Another great way to use write the room activities – add them to your sensory bins! This is a great way to use these activities in different ways.
