3 Kindergarten Book Ideas to Nurture a Sense of Self

Creating class books with your students is an amazing way to promote a love of reading and writing in the classroom. As I sought to find more ways to promote a positive sense of self with my students, I came up with some kindergarten book ideas that were a hit!

Who Am I? Eye Class Book

After reading the book, Eyes That Kiss in the Corners, I wanted to encourage my students to look closer at their own eyes (the shape and colour). I set out some mirrors, an eye shape poster and a book page each student could complete.

Eye shape poster and the book Eyes that Kiss in the Corners book displayed with a "Who am I?" writing prompt page.

My students were encouraged to look at their eyes, then draw on the book page to match. Once they did that, I took a close-up picture of their eyes and printed them out. I glued them to the bottom half of the page. Once they were all done, I bound them into a class book.

Students could look through the book any time they wanted and try to identify each set of eyes. This was harder than I thought it was going to be!

Hair Love Class Book

Another kindergarten book that was a very popular read in our classroom was based on the book Hair Love. We also watched a short movie version to compare and contrast the two stories.

Table set-up with the book Hair Love, mirrors, markers and crayons on display.

I cut head shapes out of skin-coloured construction paper and put out mirrors, and Colours of the World crayons and markers for students to use and explore.

They were invited to pick a head cutout and then use the mirrors, crayons and markers to create their hair. Once every student completed their page of the book, I bound them together so that they could read it whenever they wanted!

I Like Myself Kindergarten Book

For this last kindergarten book, I used Studentreasures Publishing to get a published book!

You can use this free program in your classroom – and you even get a free published book. The only thing you have to do is send home order forms to families. They can decide if they would like to purchase a copy of the book (they do not have to).

This is the second time I have published a book with the company; each time, it has been a great learning experience. Students learn about the steps to publish a book: draft, edit, final copy and publishing.

We based our book on I Like Myself. Each student completed the phrase, “I like my…” and drew a picture to match. We got a lot of great responses for this prompt:

  • I like my hands because I can draw.
  • I like my eyes because I can read.
  • I like my legs because I can run.

The books turned out AMAZING, and I highly encourage you to check out Studentreasures Publishing if you haven’t already!
