Kindergarten Addition and Subtraction: Engage students when teaching addition and subtraction skills with this FREE template. Students make their own stories to show their understanding of these math concepts.
I know my kindergarten students need to be engaged in order to learn about a new math concept. Are your students the same? In my experience, there is no better way to get a kindergarten student’s attention than with stamps or stickers!
I used these story writing templates when we were learning addition and subtraction skills, and they were a hit!
How i used them
First, I did an example with my students as a whole group input lesson so that they would understand what to do.
Then, I set it out during math centers so they could try making stories on their own. You could put out stickers, but I used stamps (like these).
We did this activity twice- once when we were learning about addition, then we did it again during our subtraction unit.
My students loved picking out their stamps, and got really creative with their stories. I made two different templates so that I can easily differentiate the center for all my students.
One page has a space for them to stamp and write their number sentence.
The other page has an additional space for them to write out their story. Use the one that is right for your group of students.
