Playing games in kindergarten can help develop a variety of essential skills. There are so many great games out there, and I can always find one my students will enjoy playing.
There are so many benefits of playing games with your students; here are a few:
Problem-Solving Skills
Educators know that developing problem-solving skills with their students is essential. I explicitly teach these skills to my students, but games in kindergarten are an excellent opportunity to allow students to practice problem-solving with their peers.
Critical Thinking Skills
Games in kindergarten can also help develop critical thinking skills in young children. They must practice making choices, setting goals, following through, showing self-control, and more.
With games, students must use their critical thinking skills to analyze what is happening in the game, and make appropriate choices.
Oral Language Skills
Developing oral language skills is important in getting students ready to read and write. They need to be able to communicate, share their ideas and opinions, and comprehend what others are saying.
Fine Motor Skills
I always look for ways to develop fine motor skills with my students. You have to pinch, roll, thread, grasp, and so much more when playing different types of games. This will help develop the small muscles in the child’s hands.
Build Attention Spans and Concentration
When playing games together, students must follow what others are doing and concentrate on what is coming next. These skills will transfer to other activities in the classroom, like paying attention to whole group lessons or finishing a task set out for them.
Games in Kindergarten
For these reasons and so much more, playing games in kindergarten can be a fun and engaging way to work on the critical skills students need to succeed academically.
