We have been doing number talks once a week since the new year, and our students love them! They are so excited to share their math thinking, and I love hearing how they came up with their answers. If you do not know what a Math Talk is, here are the basics: you show some kind of mental math problem to your students (we have been working on subitizing), then they must try to figure out the answer and tell you how they did it. Usually you record their answers on the board, and you can ask multiple students how they solved the same problem. The point is to get students to hear other ways of thinking about math problems, and to learn from each other.
I wrote down some of the quotes from our latest math talk, and I put it up on our bulletin board in the hallway. I also included an explanation of the math talk, a quote from the curriculum, and a challenge for other students who are walking by.
