Sight Word Activities: Find some play-based sight word activities for your kindergarten classroom. These literacy center ideas are perfect for hands-on learning, and reinforcing sight word recognition and spelling.
My kindergarten class uses a play-based model of learning. This means that my students are playing and engaged while they work. I am always looking for ways to incorporate sight word activities into our play centers and have students learning while having fun!
These are 3 centers that are easy to incorporate into your literacy centers:
1. Building with Letter Blocks
Our school bought these blocks a few years ago, and they are one of the best literacy manipulative that we have. We have taken them out throughout the school year, and our students always love using them.
If you don’t have these blocks, you can get Duplo blocks and use a permanent marker to write letters on them. Or if you would like to get a set of these blocks, this is where I found them (you might be able to find them somewhere else too): Lakeshore Word Building Blocks
Have students build sight words, their names, CVC words, simple sentences. There is so much you can do with these to differentiate the activity to match the skills you are working on.
2. Sight Word Parking Lot
Another activity that has been a popular center throughout the school year is sight word parking lot. Students pick a card and have to ‘drive’ it into the matching spot. We started the year off without the recording sheet so students could explore the different sight words. Now that the year is coming to an end, we have students practice writing them too.
This keeps our students occupied and engaged for long periods of time, and can be taken out throughout the year to keep practicing their sight words.

3. Sight Word Towers
I bought these wooden blocks on clearance at Wal-Mart and I knew right away that I wanted to create a sight word activity with them. I used a fine-tipped permanent marker to write all our sight words on each end of the block and then invited students to build with them. Then, they recorded the sight words they used.
I knew that this would be a popular center, but I didn’t realize how much fun our students would have with them. They built all different kinds of towers and they also were excited to see what their peers were building.
